Membership

The Northern Lakes Chapter is entirely run by volunteers who have a shared passion for wooden canoes. Inclusion into the Chapter mailing list is an automatic and complimentary benefit for those who are also members of our parent organization, the WCHA (see below).

However,  anyone who would like to learn more about us is most welcome to participate in our planned events. It is not necessary for you to own a wooden canoe or to use one at our various  functions. We only ask that you have, or wish to acquire, an appreciation for these historic North American craft. Currently, there are over 100 members (including some professional canoe builders) making up our group with the bulk of the membership from Ontario.

Joining the Chapter is easy! Send a request to our Chapter Head, Alex Guthro to be added to our membership mailing list.

Wooden Canoe Heritage Association

The Northern Lakes Chapter encourages everyone interested in wooden canoes to join the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA), a non-profit  organisation devoted to preserving, studying, building, restoring, and using wooden and bark canoes, and to disseminating information about canoeing heritage throughout the world.

WCHA Membership (54$ U.S. per year) includes four issues of Wooden Canoe, the WCHA’s 32-page full-colour journal. Each issue is packed with exquisite photography as well as articles about restoration techniques, canoe tripping reports, relevant historical information as well as relevant news stories about wooden canoes and gatherings of other Local Area Chapters. Sample articles written by the membership are available to download in the Links and Resources page

Additional benefits of joining the WCHA include posting of Free Classified Ads in print and on the web site featuring wooden canoes from all over North America.

The WCHA hosts the most informative wooden canoe Forums on the web. Join and post your questions for the experienced membership to respond. The knowledgeable community can help with queries about identifying specific canoe models, proper repair and restoration methods, workshop tips and other relevant information.

Each year the WCHA also hosts an Annual Assembly, the largest gathering of wooden canoe enthusiasts in the world. The five day gathering features workshops and programs on canoe building and restoration, paddling skills, presentations on wood canoe history, kids’ programs and more.

Unique wooden canoes in various state of repair are actively displayed on the grounds for all to see and examine. An onsite store features canoe related souvenirs and a highly popular auction is held on the final day featuring a wide assortment of historic and new items guaranteed to be of interest to the avid canoeist.

Activities both on and off the water give attendees a chance to see and paddle these craft, some of which are over a century old!

Attendance is typically over 300 members and 200 canoes. It has taken place in various locations in the United States (generally New York State) and a few times in Canada (Peterborough, Ontario).
