Gary Shaver's Project Updates
Northern Lakes chapter member, Gary Shaver, has provided an update on two project canoes that were first mentioned in his Member Profile post.
The first was a 16' Lakefield canoe built by Rilco Industries. The plan was for the canoe to be donated for auction with all proceeds going towards the restoration of a 100 year old cenotaph in Morewood, Ontario. Gary's grandfather and great uncle Burnis, were killed in the battle for Vimy Ridge and are commemorated on the monument.
The canoe has now been completed. It features new caned seats, contoured centre yoke, aft thwart, gunwales and decks all in ash. The canvas has been painted in two tone green and grey with a poppy to identify it with its purpose. Gary's restoration efforts raised an impressive $3,000 for the cenotaph project!
His second restoration project (canoe on far right) was originally listed as a UFO but has now been identified as a Peterborough Champlain high end model.
Gary has generously decided to gift this fine paddling hull to his nephew. Well done Gary!
